Research Focus:
Prof. Peters group has taken a systematic approach to investigating biosynthesis of diterpenoid natural products, particularly those whose production resembles that of the important gibberellin phytohormones in their initiation by a sequential pair of cyclization reactions catalyzed by class II diterpene cyclases and class I diterpene synthases, respectively. This is almost invariably followed by further transformations mediated by cytochrome P450 mono-oxygenases. Also Prof. Peters group studies range from enzymatic mechanisms and engineering to elucidation of metabolic pathways and networks, on up to physiological and ecological roles of the resulting natural products. While much of their work is centered on the important cereal crop rice (Oryza sativa), Prof. Peters group also investigates other plants, including the important Chinese medicinal herb Salvia miltiorrhiza (Danshen), as well as microbes, both bacteria and fungi. Recent results from Prof. Peters group studies on diterpenoid biosynthesis in rice and maize (Zea mays), as well as bacterial production of gibberellins, will be presented.
